A Columbus motorcyclist died Sunday morning on Interstate 185 after he collided with a tire rim laying on the roadway, police said.
William Eugene Nelson, 84, was driving north at Manchester Expressway when he hit the rim just before 11 a.m., said Lt. Jim Pope.
“A vehicle hit it first. No injuries on that,” Pope said. “Then a second vehicle hit the rim as well. That was minor. Then the motorcycle hit it. These wrecks happened seconds apart.”
Pope said it’s unknown how the rim got into the roadway, as no witnesses saw how it got there.

“Two vehicles hit it, and the people didn’t even have to go to the hospital,” Pope said.
The motorcyclist, however, died from the injuries received in the wreck, he added. Chief Deputy Coroner Freeman Worley pronounced Nelson dead at 10:55 a.m., Coroner Bill Thrower said.
