Avery Brooks, best known as Hawk in the "Spenser: For Hire" and Capt. Sisko in the "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" television series, will star in "Paul Robeson" at the Georgia Shakespeare Festival. Robeson was an athlete, actor, singer, political activist and educator and starred in such shows as "Othello" and Joe in "Show Boat" on Broadway.
Brooks was artistic director of Atlanta's Black Arts Festival from 1993-96. He has been performing this play since 1982 when it made its debut at the Westwood Playhouse in Los Angeles, the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., and the Longacre Theatre on Broadway. He also played Robeson in "Are You Now or Have You Ever Been?" both on Broadway and Off-Broadway.
The play, written by Phillip Hayes Dean, can be seen at 8 p.m. Friday-Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday in the Conant Performing Arts Center on the campus of Oglethorpe University, 4484 Peachtree Road N.E., in Atlanta.
Tickets are $15-$35; $75 VIP tickets for Friday's performance that includes a post-show reception with Brooks.
