A Columbus woman was jailed Thursday after police said she stormed into a man’s apartment and assaulted him with two butcher knives. Teresa K. Culpepper, 51, was charged with aggravated assault and possession of a knife during the commission of a crime.
Police said the assault happened about 9:45 a.m. in the 700 block of Lindsay Drive.
Jerry Richardson said he had just returned from the grocery store when he heard Culpepper threatening to kill his dog outside. She then lunged into Richardson’s apartment and started swinging the knives aggressively, threatening to kill him, according to a police report.
“I tried to catch one of the knives, but she stabbed me on my left arm twice,” Richardson said by phone. “That went on for about two or three minutes.”
Richardson said he grabbed a baseball bat near the stove and swung it in self defense. He told police he struck Culpepper once on the right side of the head.
Richardson said he did not know why he was attacked. He said Culpepper once accused him of identity theft after he opened a bank account and Culpepper received $25 from the same bank for a referral. He said his cuts are not deep but that his arm was still sore Friday.
Culpepper is scheduled for a Recorder’s Court hearing at 9 a.m. Saturday. She was being held without bond at the Muscogee County Jail.
