Phenix City police this morning arrested a man who allegedly doused his girlfriend's car with gasoline during a domestic dispute and set it ablaze.
Frank Lovett, 27, of Panama City Beach, Fla., was arrested on an unrelated count of disorderly conduct.
Police said Lovett began arguing Tuesday afternoon with his girlfriend and threatened to burn down her Phenix City residence. During the argument, Lovett asked his girlfriend to take him to the store to buy cigarettes, Capt. Frank Ivey said.
About 5 p.m., the two pulled over on State Route 165, where Lovett allegedly poured gasoline about the interior of his girlfriend's 2000 Mercury Sable. A police report did not indicate where Lovett got the gasoline, Ivey said.
Lovett's girlfriend, a Phenix City woman, was still in the car when the fire ignited, but escaped with only a minor burn on her arm, Assistant Police Chief Robert Casteel said.
"She was able to jump out of the car," Casteel said.
The Mount Olive Volunteer Fire Department responded to extinguish the blaze, Ivey said, but the car was destroyed by the fire.
Lovett was being held this afternoon in the Russell County Jail in lieu of $300 bond. Ivey said additional charges could be pending.
