What was the MTV Movie Awards like before "Twilight"?
For better or worse, it's hard to imagine the ceremony without awkward acceptance speeches from the vampire movie series' stars. Not to mention the overall sense of predictability that now dominates the show.
Welcome to the 2011 MTV Movie Awards, where "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse" won major categories like Best Movie, Best Male Performance and Best Female Performance. Comedian Jason Sudeikis hosted the two-hour show.
Viewers also saw new trailers for the upcoming "Harry Potter" and "Twilight" films. I've embedded those video clips in the article below. Here's a full recap of the show.
Never miss a local story.
One more question: What was up with Robert Pattinson?
9 p.m. - Host Jason Sudeikis kicks off the show with a pre-taped skit that plays off "The Hangover." His lost friend? Taylor Lautner. His opening monologue is heavy on Arnold Schwarzenegger jokes. Schwarzenegger fathered the ceremony's entire balcony of guests, he says.
9:13 - Best Male Performance goes to Robert Pattinson for "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse." Wow, what a shock. "I'm consistently surprised," he says while accepting the award.
9:15 - Time for a sneak peek of "Super 8." I still have absolutely no idea what this movie is about.
9:22 - Best Villain goes to Tom Felton for "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows." Fortunately, his acceptance speech isn't interrupted this year.
9:24 - We get some weird cyber version of Jim Carrey. He introduces a performance by the Foo Fighters.
9:36 - Best Jaw-Dropping Moment goes to Justin Bieber for "Never Say Never." He comes on stage to accept the award, which is a surprise since we were initially told he wasn't at the ceremony. I love you, Justin!
9:38 - On a side note, is anyone else getting annoyed by the deluge of "Teen Wolf" promos? Enough is enough.
9:46 - Best Fight goes to Robert Pattinson, Bryce Dallas Howard and Xavier Samuel from "Twilight."
9:52 - Host Jason Sudeikis sits at a piano and performs songs inspired by recent movies.
9:58 - Best Kiss goes to Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson from "Twilight." They go through their usual "will they or won't they" on-stage kiss routine, then Robert Pattinson runs into the audience and kisses Taylor Lautner. Those "Twilight" kids are so awkward.
10:01 - Time for a sneak peek of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2." Here it is:
10:07 - MTV Generation Award goes to Reese Witherspoon. Patrick Dempsey, Robert Pattinson and Chelsea Handler are incredibly awkward while presenting the award. Robert Pattinson drops an f-bomb that censors don't catch. Um, is Robert Pattinson drunk? I'm seriously worried about him right now. Reese's wisdom for girls in the audience: "It's also possible to make it in Hollywood without a reality show."
10:24 - Best Line from a Movie goes to "I want to get chocolate wasted!" from "Grown Ups." Aww, that little girl is really cute.
10:33 - Best Female Performance goes to Kristen Stewart for "Twilight." While accepting the award, she says, "We have, like, obviously the greatest fans ever."
10:34 - Time for a performance from Lupe Fiasco featuring Trey Songz.
10:46 - Best Comedic Performance goes to Emma Stone for "Easy A." She's very grateful.
10:47 - OMG. OMG. OMG. We get a sneak peek of "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1." Here it is:
10:54 - Gary Busey is walking around in a giant hamster ball. He's presenting the Best Movie award. Hmm, that makes sense.
10:55 - Best Movie goes to "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse." Again, I'm totally shocked.
11:00 - We're done!
