Columbus police have arrested a man accused of stabbing a police officer early Saturday morning.
John Howard Garrett Jr. is charged with aggravated assault on a police officer, according to police. Columbus police Lt. Lynn Joiner said Garrett turned himself in at police headquarters Monday and was booked into the Muscogee County Jail.
The charges against Garrett stem from an incident that occurred around 2:45 a.m. Saturday during a traffic stop on Oates Avenue when officer Jason Swails, 36, stopped a vehicle displaying a stolen license plate. He said one of the occupants of the vehicle stabbed him with a knife.
Swails was treated at The Medical Center for an inch-long puncture wound and released.

Garrett is scheduled to appear in Columbus Recorder's Court at 8 a.m. on Thursday, March 15.
