A two-vehicle wreck Tuesday afternoon in Meriwether County led to three deaths, Georgia State Patrol officials said.
The wreck happened about 4:15 p.m. on State Route 85 Alternate, between Shiloh and Warm Springs, Sgt. 1st Class Brandon Dawson said. A 1986 Toyota Pickup driving south in a northbound lane collided head-on with a 2006 Chevrolet Blazer, killing both people in the pickup and a passenger in the Blazer.
“Right now, it’s unknown why he was in that lane,” Dawson said of the pickup’s driver. “We may never know why he was in the wrong lane.”
The names of those involved haven’t been released, pending the families’ notification of the deaths.
A 46-year-old Warm Springs man was driving the pickup, with a 73-year-old woman as his passenger. Dawson said they collided with the Blazer, driven by a 26-year-old Columbus man with two passengers, both 22-year-old Columbus men.
The woman in the pickup and the backseat Blazer passenger died at the scene, Dawson said. The pickup driver died shortly afterward.
“The trooper could never interview him,” Dawson added.
The wreck led troopers to reroute traffic in the area until the area had been cleared.
