Columbus police have named 21-year-old Sandy Mitchell a suspect in the Sunday slaying of cab driver Byron Keith Brown.
Brown, 58, was shot in the head in his Yellow Cab at Shelby Street and Munson Drive near Benning Hills Elementary School. Muscogee Coroner Bill Thrower pronounced him dead at 4:32 a.m.
Investigators said Brown had picked up a passenger at the Motel 6 on Victory Drive about two hours before the shooting, to which police were called at 3:50 a.m.
Detectives said one lead led to another until they were able to identify Mitchell, whom they said should be regarded as armed and dangerous. He is described as black, 5 foot 10, 215 pounds, and medium to dark-complected with a 1-inch scar in the center of his forehead.
Lt. Lynn Joiner said Mitchell lives in the area of Benning Drive and Victory Drive and is known to frequent a convenience store at Shelby Street and Benning Drive.
Anyone who sees Mitchell or has more information on the case is asked to call investigators at 706-653-3400, or call 911.
