The property tax office of the Muscogee County Tax Commissioner was overflowing today as Columbus residents rushed to pay at least 40 percent of their property taxes. A line of customers spilled out the office door and into the lobby of the Government Center's east wing. Workers had the line split in two, with those paying cash on the left and those paying by check on the right.
The office off Second Avenue is open until 4:30 p.m.
Those who choose to pay only that portion today must satisfy the balance by Dec. 1. They may pay the full amount today if they wish.
Those who fail to pay today face a 10 percent penalty with interest of 1 percent for each month they are delinquent.
Never miss a local story.
The Columbus Government Center is at 100 10th St. The tax office telephone number is 706-653-4211.
