The Georgia Supreme Court has upheld the murder conviction and life sentence Zyderrious Platt got here last year for shooting his pregnant wife in the head and dumping her body in a retention pond.
The gruesome case tried before Muscogee Superior Court Judge Bobby Peters was the first here to be live-streamed online and was marked by the victim’s brother lunging at the suspect in open court before deputies tackled him.
Platt was convicted in the 2009 murder, feticide and aggravated assault of his wife, 26-year-old Jilani Platt, who was 10 weeks’ pregnant with JaLon Elizabeth King. Peters sentenced Platt to two consecutive life sentences, plus five years on a weapons charge.
“You’re lucky they didn’t seek the death penalty against you,” Peters said during the sentencing. “I didn’t see any remorse at all.”The defense argued that the sentence was too harsh, requiring that Platt, who was 33, to serve 60 years before he’s eligible for parole.
Never miss a local story.
“A sentence of 60 years, I think it’s unrealistic to think he could even do all that because he wouldn’t live that long,” said Columbus Public Defender Robert Wadkins.
Authorities believe Platt first argued with his wife about rent, then choked her and left their apartment to purchase Black & Mild cigars on Oct. 3, 2009. When he returned, he found her lying at the base of the stairs. He wrapped her in a comforter, took her to a retention pond near Schatulga Road and shot her in the head.
“He admits to strangling her, to carrying her to a retention pond, to weighing her down with a cinder block. That is Zyderrious Platt,” prosecutor Michael Craig told the jury.
Worried about her missing daughter, Jilani Platt’s mother later called police, who while canvassing the family’s Crystal Drive neighborhood caught Zyderrious Platt carrying a garbage bag with a 9 mm Luger to a Dumpster, Craig said.
The mother, Judy King, asked Peters to give her former son-in-law life in prison.
“Zyderrious Platt turned his back on God when he made the choice,” she said. “He tried to cover up his tracks with lies, more lies and even more lies. He deserves this time. Nothing else, absolutely nothing else will do.”
