Phenix City Councilman Max E. Wilkes has suffered a massive stroke and remains on life support at a Columbus hospital, Phenix City Mayor Sonny Coulter said this morning.
Wilkes, a long-time city employee who has served Phenix City in many capacities, ran for mayor this summer in a crowded race that ended in the election of Eddie Lowe. He listed his age as 72 at the time of the August election.
Wilkes, who represents the city's north side District 1, attended council's final meeting on Tuesday, as well as a canvassing of the recent runoff election.
"It's tragic really," said Coulter, who spoke with Wilkes' family this morning. "Frankly, he was looking forward to retirement. He was looking forward to just sort of slowing down some and spending time with his family."
