Workers have erected scaffolding around the iconic cupola atop the old Comer Auditorium in Bibb City. It's an outwardly visible sign that work on the structure has turned the corner from demolition to renovation, said city Director of Engineering Donna Newman.
The building was damaged last September when heavy rain caused the front section of the roof to collapse, flooding the gym floor and the basement and ruining the buildings mechanical systems. Repair and renovation will cost just over $2 million, with insurance paying about $830,000 and the Local Option Sales Tax infrastructure fund paying the rest. Work is expected to be complete in May.
