Not only did Miss Alabama USA 2012 Katherine Webb survive another week on "Splash" -- she also received the first perfect "10" of the season.
The April 2 episode of the celebrity diving show on ABC focused on partner dives. Katherine was paired with Nickelodeon star Drake Bell. Their dive required Drake to hold Katherine on his back while standing on a 33-foot-high platform. The judges loved it. Katherine and Drake topped the scoreboard.
Kendra Wilkinson wasn't so lucky. Paralyzed by fear, she refused to dive this week and was eliminated from the competition.
Webb, 23, graduated from Auburn University and was raised in the Columbus-Phenix City area. She entered the national spotlight when she watched her boyfriend, starting quarterback AJ McCarron, play for the University of Alabama in the Jan. 7 BCS National Championship. During the game, ESPN’s camera turned to Webb and sportscaster Brent Musburger gave some remarks admiring her beauty.
The result? Webb got a deluge of new Twitter followers, a spot in the 2013 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue and a gig covering the Super Bowl for "Inside Edition."
Here's a full recap of Tuesday's episode of "Splash."
Louie Anderson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar are billed as a "real diving odd couple." That's an understatement. They call themselves "Team 10" because when they stand next to each other, they look like the number 10. These two need to star in a movie together. They dive off a 16-foot-high platform together and both dive backward into the water. It's not exactly synchronized, but whatever. They get a "6" and a "5.5" from the judges.
Nicole Eggert and Brandi Chastain are called "Team Moms." They do a dive that seems pretty complicated. One of them starts off facing forward and the other is facing backward. They dive off the 16-foot-high platform and do cool stuff in the air. They're slightly more synchronized then Louie and Kareem. They get a "7.5" and a "6" from the judges.
Katherine Webb and Drake Bell perform a very complicated dive called "the javelin." It begins with Drake holding Katherine on his back. She towers above his head. He keeps holding her when he jumps off the 33-foot-high platform, then they separate in the air and go head-first into the water. Pretty awesome. They get a "10" and an "8.5" from the judges. I think I saw Katherine's mom in the audience. If you're having a hard time imagining the dive, here's a YouTube demonstration.
Kendra Wilkinson and Rory Bushfield are supposed to perform a dive that involves Rory holding Kendra while flipping in the air. Rory ignores the doctor's advice and keeps diving, even though he ruptured an eardrum during practice. The pair gets on the 23-foot-high platform and Kendra freaks out. Despite encouragement from the audience, she refuses to dive. "I'm so sorry, everybody," she says. "This is the first time in my life I've quit something...this will haunt me for the rest of my life."
With that, Kendra is eliminated from the competition and everybody else gets to stick around another week.
