A man was arrested and charged with possession of crack cocaine pipes after he drove on the sidewalk on 12th Avenue Tuesday, according to a Columbus Police Department report.
Police pulled over Matthew Johnson, 48, at about 4:20 a.m. after an officer observed him driving on the sidewalk while southbound on 12th Avenue. When the officer asked Johnson why he was driving on the sidewalk, he said it was because his girlfriend was sick and he was stopping so she could vomit. The passenger accompanying Johnson did not appear to be ill.
After discovering that Johnson did not have a state license and had several active suspensions, he was placed under arrest. The officer also reported he smelled the strong odor of burning crack cocaine on Johnson's person. When police asked Johnson if he had any drugs on his person, he said "No," but later said while inside the patrol car that he had two pipes inside each shoe.
Johnson was charged with possession of drug related objects and no state license. He was transported to Muscogee County Jail.
