Country singer Janelle Arthur was eliminated from "American Idol" on the April 18 results show. Kree Harrison joined her in the bottom two.
Was the elimination surprising? Well...no and yes. Janelle made some poor song choices this week, and immediately after the performance show I predicted she'd be in trouble.
The judges' comments this week certainly didn't help her case. At one point during Wednesday's show, Nicki Minaj said she thought Janelle was in jeopardy of going home.
Plus, Janelle delivered few memorable performances this season. Her throwback country vibe likely didn't appeal to an audience of contemporary music fans.
Never miss a local story.
Her strongest week was when she created a unique musical arrangement of "You Keep Me Hangin' On," which she sang again Thursday in an unsuccessful attempt to earn the judges' "save."
Unfortunately, she didn't channel her creativity often enough on the show.
Still, I expected the judges to use their "save" Thursday night. Seriously, what's up with that thing? Will it ever expire this season? It's supposed to disappear at the top five phase of the competition, according to Billboard.

Also on Thursday's show, the five contestants performed a Donna Summer medley.
Clay Aiken sang "Bridge Over Troubled Water," which he also sang while competing in the season two finale of "Idol." He placed second that season and lost to Ruben Studdard. "Idol" winner Fantasia performed her new single, "Lose To Win." I really enjoyed both performances.
They weren't the only celebrity guests. Former "Idol" judge Paula Abdul made a cameo and praised Candice's rendition of "Straight Up." She even sat at the judges' table for a few seconds.
Mentor Jimmy Iovine reacted to this week's performances. He said Janelle and Kree chose the wrong songs and Angie is more believable when she plays the piano. He liked Candice's "When You Believe" better than "Straight Up." He was pretty impressed with Amber this week.
Kree Harrison, Angie Miller, Candice Glover and Amber Holcomb remain in the competition.
