Veterans Memorial Middle School eighth-grader Cameron Chandler is the 2013 winner of the T. Hiram Stanley Award, considered the most prestigious honor a Muscogee County School District middle school student can receive.
The Kiwanis Club of Columbus started the award program in 1979 to recognize and encourage overall excellence among MCSD middle school students. The award, which includes a $3,000 scholarship, is named for T. Hiram Stanley, who was the local club president in 1948 and the club's district governor in 1958. He also served on the Muscogee County School Board.
In the program's 34-year history, the club has awarded more than $170,000 to the winners, who are selected based on their scholarship, leadership, community service and good character.
Cameron's community service includes Easter Seals, PAWS, Damascus Way and Kohls Cares for Kids. He also is active in his church. His interests include tennis, band, debate and politics.
