A man who attempted to hang himself at the Macon Road Columbus Public Library on Jun. 24 was pronounced dead Sunday night, according to the Muscogee County Coroner's Office.
Coroner Buddy Bryan said the man was pronounced dead in the Medical Center at about 8:24 p.m. after he was taken off of life support. The man had been on life support since attempting suicide.
Interim Director Wanda Edwards told The Ledger on June 25 that the 58-year-old man was found in the first floor bathroom by a patron shortly after the library opened. Police and EMS responded at about 10:30 a.m. and transported the man to The Medical Center.
The man was a regular patron of the library, Edwards said.
Edwards said the library was able to continue operations while the man was transported.
"The staff remained calm and the customers, for the most part, didn't know what was going on," she said.
