Earlier today, I rolled my eyes at people who posted celebratory messages for National Hot Dog Day 2013 on Facebook.
See, I specifically checked the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council's Facebook page Monday night when I heard rumors the big day was approaching.
It didn't take me long to arrive at a conclusion -- this year's National Hot Dog Day had already passed. The council even wrote this message in response to one reader's inquiry: "Lots of rumor(s) on the Internet about it being the 23rd. We've done it the 3rd Wednesday of July for a while now."
Nonetheless, I woke up this morning to find National Hot Dog Day messages scattered across the Internet.
Never miss a local story.
Apparently, the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council noticed, too.
They linked to a blog post from the American Meat Institute, which notes, "It’s tough to tell exactly how we got to this point of mass Hot Dog Day confusion, but our theory is that it caught on several years ago when Hot Dog Day happened to fall on July 23rd. Rather than recognizing it as the third Wednesday of July, it was recognized as the date itself. That’s why we see others celebrating it on several days within the same time frame."
And now you know.
So is today REALLY National Hot Dog Day 2013? You decide.
