The students and staff at Russell County High School might want to start shouting "War Eagle!" instead of "Roll Tide!" to win some points with their principal.
The Russell County Board of Education unanimously approved Tuesday night Auburn University graduate Kendrick Britford as the high school's new leader. Britford replaces former University of Alabama linebacker Vantreise Davis, who is succeeding the retiring Neal Scott as the district's nutrition director.
Britford comes from the other side of the state, three hours west in Hale County, where he was principal of Greensboro High for two years.
"He had a great interview and he has good experience," Russell County School District superintendent Mike Green said Wednesday. "He fits the bill."
Never miss a local story.
Britford, 35, is "young energetic and very enthused," Green said. "He was looking for an opportunity like this, where he's kind of familiar with the area. He went to school at Auburn and wanted to come back in this direction."
Seven candidates applied and four were interviewed, Green said.
Green said the transfer was Davis' request, and the board approved it last month.
"He applied for the job," Green said. "He was a very good principal. We really didn't want him to move."
Davis explained earlier this month that his goal is to eventually become a superintendent, so he wants to gain experience in various positions throughout a school district while increasing his education.
"It's just the best opportunity for me right now," said Davis, 46. "I also can to go back to school and work on my six-year degree. I see a lot of challenges and room for growth by working as the director and learning from other people."
Davis, a Phenix City native, played for Alabama from 1986-89, helping the Crimson Tide win the SEC championship as a senior. He looks back on his tenure as principal with equal pride.
"I think I had the opportunity to help some students -- a lot of students -- succeed," Davis said. "We had a real good time with pep rallies, sporting events and awards programs, but I also think we established some structure here."
