A man wanted on robbery charges in Georgia was shot in the leg by Phenix City Police Thursday afternoon in a shootout at the Riverview Apartments, according to Russell County Sheriff Heath Taylor.
Robert Lorenzo Anderson has been charged with three counts of attempted murder in Alabama for firing at two Phenix City Police officers and an investigator for the Russell County District Attorney's Office.
The Russell County Sheriff's Office and Alabama Bureau of Investigations are investigating.
About 4:20 p.m., police were responding to a 911 call from Riverview where shots were reportedly fired, Taylor said. The first officers to arrive heard a man exit the window of one of the apartments and saw him start to run away. As the officers gave chase, the suspect turned and began to fire a weapon at them, Taylor said. The police returned fire as they ran out of Riverview and toward Trinity Church in downtown Phenix City.
An investigator from the DA's office was leaving the courthouse and the suspect saw the law enforcement vehicle and began to fire at the car, Taylor said. The investigator returned fire, as did the officers giving chase. The suspect was hit in the leg. He was transported to The Medical Center, where is in stable but satisfactory condition, Taylor said.
"The suspect was wanted in Georgia and listed as armed and dangerous," Taylor said. Anderson was wanted on armed robbery charges.
None of the officers were injured, Taylor said. The names of the officers and investigator were not released.
"We still have a lot of people to talk to, but at this point I don't see anything to indicate this is anything more than a guy shooting at police officers and he got shot in the leg," Taylor said.
