A man allegedly spat in an officer's face while he was being booked in the Muscogee County Jail, after he was arrested and charged with beating his girlfriend with a stick, according to a Columbus Police report.
Police responded to a residence on the 3800 block of Meritas Drive Wednesday at about 11:35 p.m. after receiving reports of a domestic dispute. When they arrived, several witnesses told police that they saw Robert Carter, 24, strangle his 32-year-old girlfriend and hit her upper body with a stick. Five of the victim's children, ages between 9 years old and 16 years old, witnessed the event.
Carter was also accused of damaging $1,450 worth of a neighbor's property during the incident. How the damage occurred was not specified.
Carter was arrested and transported to Muscogee County Jail. After arriving at the jail, Carter continued to be combative and use profane language toward officers, according to the report. A spitting mask was applied to him because of a previous incident.
As an officer was attempting to secure Carter, he managed to spit through the spit mask onto the officer's face. He was charged with simple battery against a police officer for that offense.
Carter was additionally charged with family violence aggravated assault, battery with visible physical harm, criminal damage to property in the second degree, five counts of third degree cruelty to children, disorderly conduct and obstruction of law enforcement officers.
