Muscogee County School District Superintendent David Lewis will propose the hiring of an assistant superintendent of education at a work session Monday night, according to the agenda.
For the job, he is nominating Rebecca Braaten who worked with Lewis in the Polk County School District.
The work session is at 5 p.m. in the Muscogee County Public Education Center on Macon Road.
Braaten is currently the senior director of K12 science and acceleration in Polk County. She has served in several other positions in that distric, including director of academic rigor and secondary curriculum.
The MCSD has not had an assistant superintendent of education since Robin Pennock retired in June of 2008. John Phillips was the superintendent at that time.
The next superintendent Susan Andrews did not have an assistant superintendent.
At-large board member Cathy Williams said Sunday the position has never been eliminated.
At about the time Pennock retired, the economy soured. Money became tight, so the school district held off hiring a replacement.
Williams said that with changes being brought by the federal government, including the implementation of common core standards, it is wise to fill that spot now.
“It is almost a given,” she said.
Williams remarked that just about every person interviewed for the superintendent’s job mentioned the need for an assistant superintendent.
That Lewis is choosing someone he is familiar with, Williams, said, is a “very common practice.”
Phillips had previously worked with Pennock outside of Muscogee County.
