Hugging an open beer can close to her side did not help 51-year-old Brenda Perry, after she was stopped and searched by officers Saturday, according to a Columbus Police report.
Police spotted Perry near the intersection of Third Avenue and 35th Street and 1:30 a.m. She was allegedly attempting to hide a 24oz Budweiser, which the arresting officer suspected was open.
After the officer affirmed the beer was open, Perry reassured police that she was not drinking in public — just holding the beer. When the officer asked if she had any drugs or weapons on her, she "took a deep breath" and allegedly admitted to possession of 0.3 grams of crack cocaine, wrapped up in a $5 bill, which she said she bought five minutes before speaking with the officer.
The cocaine was valued at $30.
Perry was charged with possession of crack cocaine. She was taken to Muscogee County Jail.
