Worshiping God at Raceway — that's what 24-year-old James Morris told Recorder's Court he was doing when police found him yelling at passing cars on Victory Drive Wednesday.
Morris, charged with disorderly conduct and false information, was first interrupted in his alleged religious exhibitions after police received several reports from concerned drivers.
According to court testimony, Morris was pacing between the 4421 Victory Drive Raceway and the median, bellowing "Jesus Christ" repeatedly at passersby.
At about 2 a.m., an officer approached Morris and asked for his name. The response: "Jesus Christ." Questioning his bizarre behavior also elicited an alleged "Jesus Christ" from Morris.
Although police say Morris' alleged response was genuine, Morris told the court he was not claiming to be Jesus when he answered identity questions with the deity's name.
"I did not call myself (Jesus Christ). That's just what I was saying," Morris said. "I was just coming out to see the moon and worship God."
Judge Michael Cielinski set Morris' fine at $450. He is presently being held in Muscogee County Jail until the fine is paid.
