At least seven fifth-graders were injured Friday afternoon in LaGrange after an inflatable slide collapsed at Rosemont Elementary School.
Five of the injured children were examined by medical personnel at West Georgia Medical Center and released while two others were airlifted to a hospital in the Atlanta area. Both were released shortly before 8 p.m., officials said.
The Troup County Sheriff’s Department has launched an investigation into what caused the slide to collapse.
School Superintendent Cole Pugh said officials will work with authorities investigating the incident.
“We care about our children,” Pugh said. “They are our priority and we are deeply saddened by this unfortunate accident. We will continue to work closely with law enforcement officials to determine the cause. Please keep our children, families, and school staff in your thoughts as we recover from this incident.”
The children were taking part in an Accelerated Reader Celebration in the gymnasium at Rosemont.
