The officer apparently shot himself accidentally, according to multiple sources who declined to be identified.
Russell County Deputy Coroner Gilbert Kendrick confirmed the officer died from a gunshot wound in the parking lot of Carriage Hill Apartments.
Kendrick said Monday the officer was shot with a handgun inside his parked unmarked police car, but he wouldn't say how many gunshot wounds or where the officer was shot. He received the call around 10 p.m., and Kendrick said he pronounced him dead at 11:30 p.m.
Kendrick said the next of kin have been notified but wouldn't release the name.
Phenix City Police when asked for a comment Monday morning said the chief was out of the office today and would not comment. When asked for the identity of the officer, officials at the department said they would not release that information.
Phenix City Mayor Eddie Lowe said the officer's death is still under investigation. The mayor was notified shortly after the death by City Manager Wallace Hunter.
"All I can tell you right now is they are investigating," Lowe said.
In addition to the ABI, Lowe said that the Russell County Sheriff's Office assisted in the initial investigation.
Russell County Sheriff Heath Taylor said he was on the scene after the death, but could not comment.
"The ABI is investigating, so the information will need to come from the ABI or Phenix City police," Taylor said.
More information will be added as it becomes available.
