The city is planning to swap two small parcels of riverfront property to the W.C. Bradley Co. for a corridor of right of way that would eventually allow the reopening of Front Avenue between 13th and 14th Streets, according to city records.
If Columbus Council approves the swap Tuesday morning, the city would cede about 3,500 square feet of right of way on the south side of 11th Street between Front and Bay Avenues and about 1,500 square feet on Bay Avenue adjacent to the Riverclub. In exchange the city would get about 1.3 acres of property on Front Avenue between 13th and 14th Streets.
In 1996, the city swapped the Front Avenue property to Fieldcrest Mills for right of way to build the 13th Street Bridge. When W.C. Bradley bought the Fieldcrest property, it included the stretch of Front, which was part of the city’s original grid.
The city plans eventually to reopen that stretch of Front to traffic, but not until work is finished on the Riverwalk extension, 14th Street Bridge and the restoration of the Mott House. The area will be used for construction staging for those projects, as it has been used for the Whitewater project. The road could be reopened in 18-24 months, city documents estimate.
W.C. Bradley intends to use the swapped property to expand its facilities and to expand the Riverclub, city documents show.
