A former Columbus probation officer, who fled a court hearing where she was scheduled to plead guilty almost two years ago, was arrested in Columbus Tuesday afternoon.
Christy Rae Bumpus, 40, of Prattville, Ala., was taken into custody at 4:45 p.m. She is being held in the Muscogee County Jail on theft by taking and violation of oath of office charges. She will face the charges in Muscogee County Superior Court.
Bumpus is accused of taking more than $500 cash from probationers that was intended as payment for their sentences and depositing the money in her personal bank account.
Bumpus was in the courtroom April 16, 2012, with the apparent intention of pleading guilty when she disappeared. Violation of the oath of office carries a sentence of one to five years in prison while the theft charge could bring one to 10 years.
After she fled from the courtroom, a judge issued a bench warrant for her arrest.
