Movie goers will see police patrolling Carmike Cinemas locations after a woman was sexually assaulted in a restroom Tuesday night at the Carmike 15 theater complex in Columbus Park Crossing shopping center.
No suspect was described in the assault which occurred sometime between 6 p.m. and 7:27 p.m. at 5555 Whittlesey Blvd.
The 33-year-old victim told police she was sexually assaulted inside one of the theater complex’s bathrooms. She was transported to St. Francis Hospital.
No weapon was listed by Columbus police in the sexual assault.
In a corporate statement, Robert Rinderman of Carmike Cinemas said associates will assist police in the investigation and off duty police will be patrolling Carmike locations. “Our associates will continue to assist the local Columbus Police Department in their ongoing investigation and we encourage anyone with additional information to please contact Investigative Services at 706-653-3400,” he said. “As an additional precaution, Carmike will have an off-duty police officer patrolling during operating hours at its Carmike 15, Ritz 13 and Peachtree 8 locations through Sunday evening.”
The nature of the assault was not described in the report.
No other details of the reported assault were available as the investigation continues.
Detective Valerie Holder said Wednesday morning that the assault is not related to the Special Victim’s Unit’s search for a suspected rapist who police believe has been targeting women between 60 and 80 years old.
