HARRISBURG, Pa. -- The Columbus Lions opened the 2014 Professional Indoor Football League season with a 71-54 loss to Harrisburg on Sunday afternoon.
Quarterback E.J. Nemeth scored eight touchdowns for the Stampede.
The Lions led early on, taking a 13-10 advantage after the first quarter and a 34-31 lead into halftime thanks in part to touchdown catches by Kendrick Perry, Dion Small and Earl Alexander.
But Harrisburg took control in the second half, outscoring the Lions 40-20 for the win.
The Lions scored with under three minutes to play to draw to within five, 59-54, but the Stampede scored the final two touchdowns of the game.
Lions quarterback Antwon Young went 16-of-31 passing for 313 yards and seven touchdowns.
Marvin Ross had four tackles and an interception on defense for Columbus.
The Lions play their home opener on Saturday against the Richmond Raiders at 7 p.m. at the Columbus Civic Center.
