A suspect fleeing from Columbus police was nabbed Tuesday afternoon by Phenix City police after he swam across the Chattahoochee River near Oglethorpe Bridge, police said.
Before making it to the Alabama side, the man sought help when he struggled in the swift current, said police Lt. Ronald Hastings. A police officer attempted to swim toward the man but realized the current was too strong.
By the time rescue personnel entered the river, the man had reached the banks where Phenix City police took him into custody.
The man was driving a pickup truck east on Dillingham Street bridge about 6 p.m. when a motorist behind him called police and said he was struggling with a female passenger. The pickup crossed the bridge when Columbus police saw the man preventing the woman from getting out of the truck.
The man abandoned the truck after police pursued him south of Dillingham Street.
“He jumped in the river at the trade center,” Hastings said.
