Lee County Coroner Bill Harris reported Sunday that a Smiths Station woman who was attacked April 28 by pit bulls has died in an Atlanta hospital.
Katie Morrison, 20, died at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Grady Memorial Hospital from complications of severe injuries suffered in the dog attack.
According to the report, Morrison was attacked by three pit bulls.
She and the dogs' owner were reportedly playing with four dogs in the backyard of a home in the Heather Brooke neighborhood in east Lee County when she apparently knelt down to pick something up. One dog attacked her, and then two others joined in.
She was rushed by East Alabama Medical Center EMS via ambulance to Midtown Medical Center in Columbus and then transferred to Grady.
Morrison suffered a severe head injury and multiple puncture and laceration wounds over her body.
The death investigation remains ongoing by the Lee County Sheriff’s Office and the Lee County Coroner’s Office.
The dogs are currently being held in quarantine at a veterinarian's office in Opelika, Ala.
Lee County sheriff Jay Jones called it a "pretty vicious" attack.
The sheriff said that while there have been some dog attacks in Lee County, he could not remember one at this level.
He said it is an unusual case in that the victim was was well-acquainted with the dogs, and something went "terribly wrong."
