The Russell County Coroner’s Office has identified the Phenix City man accused of shooting his wife and turning the gun on himself at Carriage Hill Apartments Saturday afternoon.
Johnny Scott III, 33, died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, Coroner Arthur Sumbry Jr. said Tuesday. A deputy coroner pronounced Scott dead at 6:30 p.m. upstairs in Building V apartment at the 1800 Lakewood Drive complex, Sumbry said.
The man’s wife is still being treated for a gunshot wound to the back of her head at Midtown Medical Center in Columbus. She doesn’t recall what happened before the shooting, a relative said Tuesday.
An autopsy was performed on Scott at the Department of Forensic Sciences in Montgomery, Ala., but the preliminary report didn’t indicate the type of weapon used in the shooting.

The shooting was investigated by the Phenix City Police Department, but no one was available for comment on Tuesday.
Police were called to the complex around 2:50 p.m. to check on a shooting victim when the woman was found.
