The family from Nebraska whose story was told in the successful book and movie "Heaven is for Real" will speak in Columbus Friday night.
Todd Burpo, his wife Sonja and son Colton, who now run Heaven is for Real Ministries, will give a presentation beginning at 6 p.m. in the St. Luke United Methodist Church Ministry Center at 301 11th Street.
Music will be provided by the renowned Colorado Christian rock band Read You and Me.
Tickets are $15 and may be purchased online at itickets.com or at North Columbus Pharmacy or St. Luke in town.
"Heaven is for Real" recounts the 2003 experience of Colton, then 4-years-old. The boy was rushed into an emergency surgery.
Afterward, he told his father that he had been to heaven and began to describe events and people that seemed impossible for him to have seen or known.
Colton describes heaven as a beautiful place with lots of intensely bright colors and gives physical descriptions of Jesus and Mary.
On their website, the Burpos say they have received many testimonies from people that share about the book's influence in their personal decision to put their faith in Christ.
Nickie Tillery, the director of children's ministry at St. Luke, heard Todd Burpo speak at a conference in Orlando, Fla. in January and was so impressed she thought it would be a great idea to share the experience with Columbus families. She met with Burpo and negotiations began.
"This is very exciting," Tillery said. "It has taken weeks of hard work, but thanks to so many individuals and businesses, we will be able to bring this inspiring message to Columbus.
"Heaven is for Real" merchandise and books will be available for purchase before and after the event.
