An Auburn, Ala., man held at the Lee County Detention Facility was pronounced dead Friday after he was found unresponsive , the Lee County Sheriff’s Office said Saturday.
The man, 23, was identified as James Ike Hubbard. He was pronounced dead at 11:40 p.m. CDT, about 50 minutes after he was found unresponsive. His body has been transported to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences in Montgomery for a post mortem examination.
Authorities said he had been sentenced to serve three weekends in jail after he was convicted of driving under the influence in Opelika Municipal Court on Wednesday. His first weekend in the facility was Friday.
Witnesses said Hubbard was observed in the parking lot leaving a vehicle at 6 p.m. He appeared to be intoxicated as he fell to the ground and got back on his feet.
Deputies went to the parking lot and escorted Hubbard to the booking area where deputies observed the man to be intoxicated. After responding to questions from deputies, Hubbard was then placed in a holding cell where he remained under observation.
Deputies entered the cell after observing Hubbard on the floor and unresponsive.
The death is under investigation by the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency.
