It is doubtful that Bill Blake knew what he was starting when he named what we believe is the first All-Bi-City football team.
As I was doing research on when the first such team was named by the Ledger-Enquirer, I found his column in 1937. There wasn't a lot of fanfare about the naming of the team. Just Bill musing about who were the best players he had seen that season.
Eighty years later, we are still at it. Of course, we have expanded to include all of the other sports played in our Bi-City high schools such as basketball, baseball, soccer, just to name a few.
We name All-Bi-City teams in 13 sports.
Never miss a local story.
It is a responsibility that we take a lot of pride in. It is also one in which we put a lot of resources into from getting nominations from the coaches, choosing the teams, shooting mug shots of all the first-teamers and writing stories about the best in that sport that year.
We know first hand how meaningful it is to the athletes, coaches and parents in the area, and that is why we strive to get it right. However, with any all-star team, the selection is subjective, so there will always be disagreements about who made the team and who didn't.
As the Bi-City area has grown, so has the number of schools. And that also means there are more athletes than ever before.
One of the toughest parts about picking the teams is the players aren't on the field at the same time as schedules and leagues make that impossible.
Taking that into consideration, we have decided to make a change for the football, basketball and baseball teams.
Starting with this school year -- 2014-15 -- we will choose two teams in each of those three sports.
One team will come from players in GHSA Class AAAAA and AHSAA Classes 6A and 7A. That would include Carver, Columbus, Hardaway, Harris County, Northside, Shaw, Russell County, Central and Smiths Station.
The other team will come from players in GHSA Class AAA, AA and A and private schools. That would include Jordan, Kendrick, Spencer, Brookstone, Pacelli, Calvary Christian, Glenwood, Chattahoochee County and Marion County.
We will announce the All-Bi-City football teams on our website, ledger-enquirer.com, and in our print product on Dec. 24-25.
