Phenix City Mayor Eddie Lowe, will be the commencement speaker at Chattahoochee Valley Community College's graduation Friday.
The ceremony in the Columbus Convention & Trade Center is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
"We are honored to have Mayor Lowe join us for this occasion and look forward to the message he has for our graduates," CVCC interim president Valerie Richardson said in a news release.
Lowe, the senior vice president for Columbus Bank and Trust of East Alabama, is the only black mayor in Phenix City history. The former Central High School star linebacker also made history at the University of Alabama, where he became the only football player to begin his Crimson Tide career as a walk-on and end it as a permanent team captain.
After earning a bachelor's degree in finance in 1983, Lowe played nine seasons in the Canadian Football League, including All-CFL in 1989, and was inducted into the Saskatchewan Roughriders Plaza of Honor and the Chattahoochee Valley Sports Hall of Fame.
Approximately 200 students are eligible to graduate from CVCC this spring, and about 150 of them have chosen to participate in Friday's ceremony.
