A suspect who allegedly led authorities on a high-speed chase that took the life of Montgomery County Sheriff Ladson O'Connor has been arrested.
WTOC reported that Jim Edward Lowery, 35, and Dixie Best, 36, began a high-speed chase after refusing to pull over for a routine traffic stop. The two reportedly fired several shots at the deputies.
O'Connor joined the chase as backup before crashing on Georgia Highway 56 near the border between Toombs and Montgomery County. Officials have not released specifics about the crash.
O'Connor took office as sheriff three years ago. He leaves behind a wife and four children.
