TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- Alabama's board of trustee's compensation committee approved contracts for men's basketball coach Avery Johnson and multiple football assistant coaches, including defensive coordinator Kirby Smart, on Tuesday.
Johnson's deal, which runs through 2021, will pay him more than $2.8 million per year. The first-year coach will receive a base salary of $265,000, a talent fee of $2,535,000 and a $12,000 expense account per year.
Some other notable details from Johnson's contract include a $50,000 bonus for winning the SEC tournament, a $50,000 bonus if he takes the Tide to the NCAA tournament in his first two years and a $25,000 bonus if he wins SEC Coach of the Year.
On the football side, Tide defensive coordinator Kirby Smart was bumped from $1.3 to $1.5 million and had his deal extended by one-year to 2018. Offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin was the lone coach to not have his contract amended. Kiffin is entering the second year of his three year deal that pays him $680,000 for first two years and $714,000 for the third.
Every other assistant coach received a raise while new coaches Tosh Lupoi (outside linebackers) and Mel Tucker (secondary) had their contracts approved.
Johnson's contract details
Bonuses: $50,000 for winning SEC regular season championship; $50,000 for winning SEC Tournament; $10,000 for appearance in SEC Championship game; $50,000 for appearance in NCAA Tournament (first 2 contract years), $25,000 thereafter; $25,000 for each NCAA Tournament win (outside of the) Final Four; $50,000 for each win in Final Four; $25,000 for SEC Coach of the Year; $50,000 for NCAA Coach of the Year. Academic bonus to $25,000 for 85% graduation rate and being above NCAA APR cut score.
Buyouts: If coach leaves during contract year 2, $3.5M; Contract Year 3, $2.75M; Contract Year 4, $2M; Contract Year 5, $1.5M; Contract Year 6, $1M.
If University terminates contract without cause during contract year 2, $7M; Contract Year 3, $5M; Contract Year 4, $4M; Contract Year 5, $3M; Contract Year 6, $1M. Subject to offset from other employment in the field of amateur, collegiate or professional sports in a coaching, administrative, management or broadcasting position.
Football assistant coaches:
Defensive coordinator Kirby Smart: raise from $1.3 to $1.5 million and was extended a year to 2018.
Offensive line coach Mario Cristobal: raise from $500,000 to $515,000 (two years remaining on current contract)
Secondary coach Mel Tucker: approved at $500,000 until Feb. 29, 2016 and $600,000 until until Feb. 28, 2017
Tight ends/Special teams coach Bobby Williams: raise from $428,000 to $440,840 (two-year contract until Feb. 29, 2017)
Outside linebackers coach Tosh Lupoi: approved at $425,000 until Feb. 28, 2017
Defensive line coach Bo Davis: raise from $450,000 to $475,000 until Feb. 28, 2017
Strength and conditioning coach Scott Cochran: raise from $395,000 to $420,000 until Feb. 28, 2017
Running backs coach Burton Burns: raise from $335,000 to $345,000 until Feb. 28, 2017
Wide receivers coach Billy Napier: raise from $325,000 to $340,000 until Feb. 28, 2017
