Columbus police car found burning at gas station

No one was injured when a Columbus police car caught fire early Monday at a Cusseta Road gas station, according to an incident report.

Officials said they are still investigating the incident, but they believe a mechanical issue may have caused the fire. Foul play isn't likely, according to Columbus arson investigators.

An official with the Muscogee County Sheriff's Office said he was driving in the area when he noticed a burning patrol car parked at the 1011 Cusseta Road gas station. He called 9-1-1 to report the 1:15 a.m. incident, police said.

Columbus firefighters and police arrived on the scene and found the 2013 Dodge Charger engulfed in flames. Officials said they extinguished the fire and determined that it caused extensive damage to the front end and engine compartment of the car.

The estimated cost of damages wasn't listed in the police report.
