A Columbus mother charged with child cruelty was accused of striking her children with an extension cord, leaving welts and bruises on their bodies, according to testimony Thursday morning in Recorder’s Court.
Brineisha Ranaye Gardner, 27, pleaded not guilty to two counts of first-degree child cruelty. She was ordered held in the Muscogee County Jail under bonds totaling $10,000.
Judge Julius Hunter bound the case over to Superior Court.
Columbus Police said a woman arrived at the Public Safety Center around 2:05 p.m. July 12 and reported that Gardner was abusing her children. The kids had severe injuries on their bodies, including welts on their backs.
The Department of Family and Children Services was notified about the accusations.
Authorities said they conducted an interview with the girls in which the children stated Gardner spanked them with extension cord.
During an interview with detectives, Gardner allegedly said she struck the children, causing serious injuries.
“She stated that she had indeed spanked them, but she didn’t use an extension cord,” a detective with told the court. “She said she used a switch. She said she actually used three switches that she wove together.”
