About one month after a church was broken into on Benning Drive, the man accused of the incident was arrested in connection with the Feb. 9 incident.
James Mathis, 59, was taken into custody on Wednesday and charged with burglary. He was booked into the Muscogee County Jail for a 9 a.m. Saturday hearing in Columbus Recorder's Court.
Columbus police were called to the Faithful Missionary Baptist Church at 907 Benning Drive on 12:45 p.m. Feb. 9 to investigate a burglary.
Officials said Mathis forced his way into the church, causing about $9,000 worth of damage to the ceiling.
