A Hardaway High School student was hit in the face with a baseball bat during a brawl near Lindsey Drive on Wednesday afternoon.
According to a Columbus police report, the fight occurred at around 4 p.m. in a vacant lot near the intersection of Melrose Drive and Lindsay Drive between Carver High student Chris Harris and Hardaway High student Terell McFarland. There were also several witnesses present.
There were reports of bats or batons being used and pistols fired during the fight, police said.
According to the report, McFarland, 18, was hit on the head with a baseball bat and sustained a laceration to his upper lip and the back of his head. He was taken to Doctors Hospital for treatment. Harris, 17, sustained a laceration to his right ankle.
A 1994 red Buick Century was also damaged in the fray.
The school district’s director of communications Valerie Fuller said students were notified of the possibility of a fight via text message. She said the argument began over a girl.
Principal Matt Bell sent out a message to parents last night informing them of the incident.
Fuller said the school hasn’t reported any major discipline problems or student absences today. About 95 percent of the students at Hardaway were in class today, which she said was normal.
