An 8-year-old Columbus boy was visiting his father in the metro Atlanta area on Friday when a suspect burst into an apartment, began firing wildly and fatally shot the Dimon Elementary School second-grader, police said.
Andrae Brooks, whose mother is a Columbus resident and has full custody, was visiting his father when the pair went to a Norcross, Ga., apartment around 4:30 p.m. for a haircut, said Gwinnett County Police Officer Brian Kelly.
Three adults and Brooks were inside the ground-floor apartment at Madison Ridge Apartments when a suspect burst through the front door.
“As he’s ordering everyone to the floor, he began firing,” Kelly said. “He appeared to be firing randomly.”
Some two to five shots were fired, the officer said. One hit Brooks in the head, killing him, he added. No one else was hurt.
