A 1-year-old child and two adults were shot after gunfire erupted Thursday morning in North Highland, Columbus police said.
Police Lt. John McMichael identified the victims as Vanessa Murana, 17, Darius Johnson, 20, and Izaiah Murana, 1.
Vanessa Murana suffered a gunshot wound to her left hand, Izaiah Murana to his right leg; and Johnson was shot in his left side and bicep as well as his right forearm.
All three are said to be in stable condition at The Medical Center.
McMichael said the shooting appeared to be of a “retaliatory nature.” It occurred in the 3600 block of Fourth Avenue and is believed to have taken place between 12:05 p.m. and 12:15 p.m.
Shortly after the shooting, police sent about 20 officers to a home on Third Avenue just north of 40th Street looking for one of the suspects in the shooting. The home is at least five blocks away from the scene of the shooting on Fourth Avenue.
Tony Brooks said he was helping his brother work on his pickup truck when police cars streamed into the neighborhood. Officers temporarily blocked Third Avenue between 40th Street and 41st Street while police questioned people in the house.
Police Capt. J.D. Hawk said officers were on the scene in both locations. Police sealed off the home at 3616 Fourth Ave. with yellow tape.
McMichael said detectives were still seeking suspects in the shooting. “No arrests but we’ve got some suspects in mind,” he said about five hours after the shooting. “We don’t have any arrests at this time yet.”
