Police are investigating the death of a 52-year-old woman on Thomas Street after her body was found Tuesday in her East Wynnton apartment.
Brenda Lowe, 52, was found in her apartment at about 10 a.m. Columbus police Lt. Lynn Joiner said the woman's body was discovered after her family asked authorities to check on her.
"Family members hadn't seen the lady in apartment 'B' since the weekend," Joiner said. "When they opened the door to check on her, she was deceased in the house."
Joiner said the body appeared to have been left in the house for "an extended period," requiring investigators to wear breathing masks during the investigation.

Police are investigating the death as a possible homicide until an autopsy determines a cause of death. However, some facts surrounding the death are unusual, Joiner said.
"When we're not sure we work it like it is a murder," Joiner said. "I can't confirm anything about the inside of the house or the body. There's just some things in there that are a little bit out of the ordinary. That's the best I can say."
According to a neighbor, Lowe was a janitor at Carver High School. She was fond of playing the lottery, particularly Cash 4, and generally kept to herself.
Coroner Buddy Bryan said more details would be available this afternoon.
