Cleanup crews in Opelika, Ala., were at the scene of a crashed tanker this morning after the truck overturned late Friday on Interstate 85, Opelika police said.
The 11:11 p.m. CT crash forced the closure of southbound lanes between Exit 62 and Exit 64 in Opelika as authorities detoured traffic around the truck hauling kemira acrymalide, a substance used in the production of synthetic polymers. At the No. 62 mile marker, one lane of traffic remains open in the northbound lane, police said.
The tanker crash occurred shortly after a northbound Buick Lacrosse left the roadway and struck the cable median divider. The driver of the car had left the vehicle stopped in the northbound lane when the Freightliner tanker struck the car, sending the truck into the cable divider and overturning on its side in the median. The truck’s cab was in the inside lane of the southbound lane.
The 54-year-old truck driver was treated for minor injuries at East Alabama Medical Center. The driver of the car escaped injuries.
