A 7-year-old girl died Friday in Opelika, Ala., after falling ill and unresponsive at Jeter Primary School, authorities said.
Lee County Coroner Bill Harris withheld the name of the child at the request of her parents. The first-grader was pronounced dead at 11:33 a.m. CDT at the East Alabama Medical Center, he said. Her body was sent to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences in Montgomery for a postmortem examination to determine a cause of death.
Paramedics from the Opelika Fire and Rescue and the hospital’s Emergency Medical Services were called about 10:24 a.m. to check on an unresponsive child in the physical education room. The child went into cardiac arrest while en route to the hospital and paramedics tried to revive her. Those efforts continued at the hospital’s emergency room but were unsuccessful.
No foul play was suspected in the death of the child who had no significant medical issues, Harris said in a statement.
