A Phenix City teen is accused of grabbing the steering wheel of a car driven by his mother Thursday and crashing the vehicle into a lamp pole on Veterans Parkway at 11th Street, Columbus police said.
Alex Arnold, 18, was charged with one count each of reckless conduct, criminal damage to property, duty upon striking a fixed object, obstruction of a driver’s control of a vehicle, striking a fixed object and not wearing a seat belt in the 1:10 a.m. accident. Arnold was held in the Muscogee County Jail on bonds totaling more than $4,700.
Police said Arnold was a passenger in a 2007 Chrysler Sebring driven south on Veterans Parkway by his mother when the teen was in a verbal dispute before grabbing the steering wheel and forcing the car into a lamp pole. Damaged to the pole was estimated at $2,000.
The boy’s mother sustained an injury to her right arm but was not treated while her son had a cut to his forehead.
