A Motel 6 guest was arrested Thursday afternoon for the unlawful reproductions of recorded material, according to a Columbus police report.
At about 12:30 p.m., officers responded to the Motel 6 on 3050 Victory Dr. in reference to a guest unlawfully reproducing recording material, which is a felony.
Travis Smoker, 29, was arrested at the scene and also charged with possession of marijuana (less than an ounce).
Under the Georgia code, unlawful reproductions of recorded material are felony offenses punishable by up to two years in prison or a fine of $25,000 — for the first offense. The offense is defined as the knowing transfer, sale, distribution, circulation of sounds or visual images on a disc, tape, film, etc. without the consent of their owner.

This statue does not apply to those persons who transfer material solely for personal use and without any derived profit; and transfer in connection with a radio or TV broadcast, or related uses.
The case remains under investigation.
